Year 3 were very lucky to have a talk today from local stained glass artist Derek Hunt and his trainee Juliet. As a link with our topic of Caves, Caravans and Castles (homes through the ages) and Science (Changing Materials) we found out about an ancient craft that has been relatively unchanged since the 12th Century.
The children learned about the design of the windows, as well as the tools and materials used to create colour and texture. Derek brought some of his special tools, including a badger brush and an English stippling brush. The children also got to smell a secret ingredient used to mix the paint ….. Lavender! We saw many examples of Derek’s designs, in churches, museums and hospitals from Medbourne to Scotland. We particularly enjoyed looking for the pork pie hidden in the window of a church in Melton Mowbray.
What a great way to start our topic – thank you Derek and Juliet.
